introduction:
Little (photo)shop of horrors. How to turn yourself into a dirty, rotten scoundrel of a zombie.
requirements:
Adobe Photoshop 6 or higher
target result:

step 1
The source file. I find it's always better to take your own source images rather than search the net of other places for something to work on. This way you can set up the shot so it is exactly what you had in mind, the lighting, etc can be changed and what have you. In this tutorial, I wanted my zombie to be reaching out of his grave, hand towards the camera.

step 2
Some of you might be wondering if this is the finished tutorial, but it's not! Let's start by taking the 'zombie' out the background. Choose the brush tool (B on the keyboard) and select a big, hard brush.

step 3
Now press 'Q' to activate mask mode, and 'paint' inside the zombie. We're not actually painting, but creating a mask. You should have something like this:

step 4
Now make the brush size smaller, softer and zoom in to get a good look at the edges:

step 5
Now carry on until everything is covered. Don't forget to press the Spacebar in order to move around.

step 6
Now press 'Q' again and we have the selection:

step 7
But no we don't! We have created a mask, so this is the only thing that is blocked from the selection. To solve this, click Select->Inverse:

step 8
That's better. Now an easy bit. Crtl+C to copy, Crtl+N to open a new document, and finally Crtl+V to paste our selection. End of easy bit.

step 9
Right, we now have 3 main areas to work on; the head, the hand and the T-shirt. Let's start on the head, as it's the most fun. Zoom in!
