introduction:
There comes a time in any photoshop user's life when they finally notice a little tool in the filter menu called 'Vanishing point'. But what is this strange and mysterious tool, What does it do, apart from annoy people? Nearly all, they say, is about to be revealed.
requirements:
Adobe Photoshop 6 or higher
target result:

step 1
So this is what we start with; a wall, made of bricks. Commonly known as a 'brick wall'. CRTL+A to select all of it, CRTL+C to copy the selection, CRTL+N to open a new document (choose 800x600 for width and height) and finally, CRTL+V to paste our selection.

step 2
As you are no doubt aware, we have to scale it down A LOT. CRTL+T to enter transform mode and SHIFT+drag on of the corner handlebars. We press and hold SHIFT to constrain the aspect ratio. Good. What we are going to do now, is distort the wall to make a 3 dimensional look.

step 3
First, drag some guide lines down from the top and across from the left. Next, hit CRTL+T to enter transform mode and right-click it. From the list that appears, choose 'Perspective'. Good, now drag the top left-hand corner down a bit. Now here's the problem. When we distort it, the bricks get distorted, too. Don't like it. I am not happy. No sir.

step 4
Luckily, there's a solution. Right-click again but this time choose 'Scale' and drag the left-center handlebar in a bit:

step 5
Now I want some diagonal guide lines, but guess what? There aren't any! So we're going to have to improvise. Press SHIFT+I a couple of times until you have cycled through the tools and have the measure tool selected. Next, drag it from the top right hand corner of our wall and extend it to the guide line. Make sure it lines up with the top of the wall! That done, drag a guide line down to the end of the measure tool. Now do the same with the bottom of the wall:
