I suggest to use images with the white background or a solid color...

Before / After

Duplicade the background twice (CTRL + J 2 times).

Now you have 3 layers in total

Now, go to IMAGE > MODE > LAB COLOR to change to lab color mode....

*** DON'T MERGE ***

Filter > Stylize > TRACE CONTOUR
