What are you looking for?

Tutorial goal:

Turn your portrait into a Roman wall painting. The most important source is the background, and instead of copying an old fresco, we are going to create our own.

step 1

Here you can see what our result will be like.

step 2

We start with a background from www.sxc.hu.

step 3

Make a background copy :
layer 1 : red layer
layer>new adjustment layer>color balance
layer>new adjustment layer>brightness/contrast
Make a second background copy :
layer 2 : golden layer
layer>new adjustment layer>color balance
layer>new adjustment layer>brightness/contrast
Merge the clipping masks.

step 4

Make another background copy :
layer 3 : light layer
layer>new adjustment layer>lightness
layer>new adjustment layer>contrast
Make a new background copy :
layer 4 : grey layer
layer>new adjustment layer>saturation
Copy the red layer
layer>new adjustment layer>brightness
Merge the clipping masks.
Safe the PSD file because you'll need the layers lateron.

step 5

Paste the girl (without the background) on the background layer. All the other layers have to be above the girl layer.

avatar Claudiolkymy doubts:

- Paste the girl (without the background) on the background layer

- Now you have to erase different parts on each layer with a soft brush tool.
Make all the layers invisible (by clicking on the eye in the layer window).
Make on layer visible again and erase some parts. Then make a second layer visible again, etc...

- Now we need the PSD file with the background layers

- Copy the golden layer from the PSD file. Erase most of it, only leave a few golden parts on the
outside.

avatar hillekeYou have to safe the psd files of the whole background layers. After erasing part of the layers you
still need to paste a few whole layers on top...

avatar hillekeThese are guidelines, the tutorial isn't meant to make a copy of my entry, but to apply it on
another portrait. Most tutorials are meant for that purpose.
You asked me for the sxc.hu source photo about an hour ago, and now you are giving up? You can't
finish an entry like this in an hour... It's not just about pushing a few buttons...

avatar hillekeJust the face of the girl, not the background of the portrait... You can see in the step photo what
I mean can't you?
You see the "background" layer in the layer window? Paste her on top of that one. Layer
1-2-3-etc are on top of the girl layer.

avatar kaghsterThis is a great tutorial. I followed the steps and I am very happy with the result. I find that
"erasing" steps the most difficult and I think that needs a little bit of artistic skill
as well. Thanks for sharing this tutorial with us.
