introduction:
In this tutorial we show you how to make a realistic change in hair roots color.
requirements:
Adobe Photoshop 6 or higher
target result:

step 1
Go to File->Open and open an image:

step 2
Make a nice selection with a 2-pixel feathered Lasso tool around the dark root areas of the hair. Avoid selecting any forehead skin.

step 3
Use the eyedropper tool(set to 3 X 3) to sample a lighter shade in the person’s hair.

step 4
With the selection still active, select the adjustment layer icon( a ball half white/half black) at the bottom of the Layer palette. Choose Solid Color. The color you choose will automatically be used.

step 5
Change the Color Fill layer’s blending mode to Soft Light. Refine the transition of the colored area using a soft, white brush. Use white as the foreground color to reveal the lighter shade; use black as the foreground color to conceal the lighter shade.

step 6
Now use a filter>blur>Gaussian Blur(high – at the example 20 has been used) to soften the edges.. If you do not like the color, double click the Solid Color thumbs at the Layer palette and use the eyedropper to select a new shade(lighter hair) from the existing hair. If an additional lightening or color is needed, use CTRL + J and work with the opacity.

step 7
Final result.
