Tutorial goal:
I've got a cool way to come close to creating those cool multi color paint jobs that you see on the street currently. I'm using photoshop8 and the items I'm using should be available in all versions of ps.

step 1

The first trick is to find a good picture of a car that you like. I've found a nice shot of a 2004 Mitsubishi Eclipse concept car. The photo was located at www.freeautowallpapers.com.

step 2

Next, I cropped out the reflections in the water to make it easier for me to use. You would use the crop tool located here.

step 3

Now we're going do duplicate the layer.

step 4

On the duplicate layer we're going to add a layer mask by clicking on the icon under the red circle. Also make sure that you have your default colors (black and white) and that black is the foreground color. You can reset to the default colors by hitting the D key on your keyboard. If white is the foreground and black is the background, you can click the X key and they'll switch.

step 5

Make sure you have the layer with the layer mask selected and it wouldn't hurt to click inside the white box in the layer tool to make sure you''re going to edit the layer mask and not the layer itself. Hit the \ key on your keyboard and when you start applying a layer mask you'll be able to see what you've masked and what you haven't. I've selected a fairly large brush as well as turned the softness all the way down to 0. Next go ahead and start painting around your car. Don't forget to include the wheels, windows, headlights, tail lights etc. as we don't want to apply our paint effect to them we only want to alter the paint job on the body. Don't worry about being too careful at this point, we can clean up any "overspray" in a little bit.
