Tutorial goal:
Sometimes finding a great background photo and pasting something beautiful on it isn't enough. Both photos should blend in as if they were one photo. The colors should match, the mood should match. In this tutorial I am showing you blending modes can help.

step 1
You can find the blending modes in the layers window. It's always nice to try them all out, because not every layer needs the same blending mode.
Here you can see the fairy without and with blending modes. You have to agree, it looks ten times better with...

step 2
Use the lasso tool to select the girl.
edit>copy
Open a new image window.
file>new
Give it a bright color. First select a color (red) with the eyedropper tool, then fill it with the bucket tool.
edit>paste
With the eraser tool we mask the girl.

step 3
With the move tool you can drag the masked girl to the background photo.
Rotate her so she looks like she's flying.
edit>transform>rotate
If you need to change the size:
edit>transform>scale
Don't forget to hold the shift key while scaling, if you don't you'll distort the girl.
We will call this layer "layer1-girl"
You can rename a layer by right-clicking on the layer in the layers window, then click "layer properties" and type in the new name in the box.
Click "ok".

step 4
Because we can't see her face very well, we will replace the head. In case you are wondering why I didn't use the second photo to start with, she doesn't look like she's flying in that one.
Select the head with the lasso tool.
edit>copy
Open a new image window.
file>new
Color it. (see step 2)
edit>paste
Mask it with the erasor tool.
When it's masked, drag it to the main photo with the move tool. Move the head to the right place and use a soft eraser tool on low opacity to blend the two photos.
We'll call this layer "layer2-head"

step 5
While holding the shift key, click on "layer1-girl" and "layer2-head" in the layers window.
Right-click on the layers and "merge layers"
Use a soft eraser on low opacity to remove a little bit of the sleeve, to make it transparent.
