Tutorial goal:
In this tutorial I'll show you a few easy masking techniques. One with "color range selection" and one with the use of different blending modes. Explained for beginners. Done in CS2.

step 2
Select the girl with the lasso tool.
edit>copy

step 3
Go to the background photo.
edit>paste
This will be "layer 1"

step 4
We have to remove the black around the girl. We can use the eraser, but it will take a long time and the lace will be very difficult to mask.
We can also use the magic eraser tool, but that isn't the cleanest way to mask.
So we will try with blending modes.
First make a copy of layer 1.
Right click on layer 1 in the layers window and "duplicate layer".
This new layer is "layer 1 copy"
Set the blending mode to "difference" in the layers window.
I made layer 1 invisible (by clicking on the eye in the layers window) to show you the result of "difference"

step 5
Duplicate layer 1 for the second time. This new layer is called "layer 1 copy 2"
Set the blending mode to "lighten".
