Tutorial goal:
In this tutorial, I will try to show you how to mask an animal or a plush keeping the hairy effect it has. We will do this using a layer mask and the smudge tool.

End result:

step 1


Open your image and doublr click on thebackground image in the layer palette to create a layer,name it “reference” press ok.

Duplicate the layer, call it “masked goat”.
Since we don’t need the refence layer for the moment, hide it by clicking on the eye icon.


step 3


With the pen tool, outline your goat, try and follow the animal’s edges, don’t worry about leaving hair out. Same with the moustache, we’ll recreate it later.


step 4


Once you have finished outlining the goat, with the pen tool still selected, right click with the mouse and select « Make selection »
Feather radius 1, then click OK


step 5


With your selection active, click on add layer mask.
