Tutorial goal:
This is a tutorial on how to turn a photo of a person into a vector image. [Forewarning it's kinda long] This is part 1 of three. These are the basic shapes, the other will go into more detail of blending and making it more realistic. If you have any questions about how this is done or if you are having any trouble, feel free to contact me! Feedback is greatly appreciated so that I can make better tutorials for everyone! This does require a knowledge of how the pen tool works. If you'd like to learn the pen tool I suggest going here >> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oGiUuBNVvAI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=12X7Og-4-VM

step 6
Now we're going to add another step to our highlights before going back to the shadows.
Step 1 ::
Create a new group.
I've labeled mine "Face Highlights Bright"
Step 2 ::
This time we're going to be more speicific with the shapes drawn.
Staying against the brightest parts of the face.
This time as well we will let the shapes draw themselves on their own layers inside the group.
Color Used - f2c1b3
Note :: At this point it may be easier to draw with the layers turned off so that you can focus the attention without the distractions of them.
I've turned them off to trace the highlights, then turned them back on to fine tune their shapes to blend better with the ones already drawn.

step 7
Now we're going to fine tune the shadows of the face.
We're going to start with the darkest point, the ears.
Step 1 ::
Create a new group.
I've labeled mine "Ear Shadow"
Step 2 ::
Trace out the darkest area of the ear, don't worry about it's blending spots just yet [that's part II]
Color Used - #3d2118
Step 3 :: The top curve of the ear is a good enough color difference that we will give it it's own shape.
I've labeled this shape Ear Shadow 2
Color Used - #532d24
Both layers should be set for opacity of 25%

step 8
Now for the second darkest feature on the face.
Her nose.
Only one nostril has enough of a color difference that it needs to be addressed with it's own shape.
Keep in mind raw vectors like this, only the biggest changes are given attention.
Create a new layer for this shape.
I've labeled mine "Nostril Shadow"
Trace out the core shadow of the nostril itself.
Color used - #532819

step 9
Now for the details. We'll start with the lips since they are the easiest.
Step 1 ::
Create a new group.
I've called mine "Lips" [pretty simple eh?]
Again it will be easier to make the other layers transparent since this will involve quite a bit of detail.
Since this is a very small area with detail I've zoomed in once for focus on the lines.
Step 2 ::
Select a mid tone again for the basic outline. This will act in the same fashion as the face base color.
Color Used - #d98269
Step 3 ::
Out line the core shape of her lips.
Step 4 ::
Trace the hard shadow between her lips.
Color Used - #9d3712
This can also be used with the stroke path method, but I'm wanting harder lines at this point and will use that later for smaller details.

step 10
Last step in this section for the lips.
On to the highlights and shadows.
Step 1 ::
Create a new layer inside the "Lips" group.
I've labeled mine "Highlights"
Again let the pen tool draw the shapes freely inside this group.
Color Used - #f4b2a5
Step 2 ::
Create another layer.
I've labeled mine "Lip Shadows"
Trace the shadows of the top and bottom lip.
I've done two shapes.
Color Used - #ac5f49
Set Layers Opacity to 22%
