After layer are merged you can copy and free transform as many rays you would like in your Sun.

Make some rays bigger and some smaller.

step 8

Add a new layer of white with a soft brush in the middle.

step 9

Now do a gradient mask to the center. this will soften the edges of the rays. after the mask is selected, hit the delete key a couple of times until you have the effect you want.

step 10

You can do two masks, one on the larger rays that you merged and one on the smaller rays that you merged. that way you get a variation.
