Click SELECT then INVERSE. Now click FILTER and then BLUR and the MOTION BLUR and use the following settings:

ANGLE: -61
DISTANCE: 20 PIXELS

And then click OK.

Then click SELECT and then DESELECT and your image should now look like this.

Now select the PEN TOOL again and click just under the apex of the feather. Hold down your SHIFT key and click down at the bottom of the feather allowing extra for the end of the spine and then click on the top point again to create the line that will become the spine.

Now select the CONVERT POINT TOOL and double click on the top point and draw out the handles to the left and right of the feather. Repeat the same action again at the bottom, but making this part slightly thicker than the top. Then drag the handles to the centre of the feather to create the thin spine but make sure that the bottom is slightly thicker than the top.

Now hold down the CONTROL key and click the SHAPE 2 layer to make a selection

avatar unkskittyI had trouble going from step 2 to step 3 without my path vanishing. You might want to mention that you should have shape layers on BEFORE drawing the path in step 2 so that when you go to edit the path it is still there! (Otherwise i it is just a work path.)
