Rasterize this shadow layer (Menu Layer -> Rasterize -> Shape)
and use filter Gausian Blur (Filters->Blur->Gausian Blur...). You should play a little with the value. It depends, how strong and sharp your shadow should be and how big is your image.
You can see, in my image shadow is over every side of image very lightly. That's how we can differ white border from the white background ;-)

Now, we are finish with the red square and this layer can be deleted or hidden (as you want).
The last step, I have created some reflection effect in the borders of an image on a new layer with very smooth brush with 30% opacity and grey color.

Optional step...
If you want to bring your object out from the border with some parts, you can use the 100% white brush and draw into the layer mask some parts.
Here is the reason, why I use masks instead of deleting ;) it is NON DESTRUCTIVE hiding/showing of the picture ;-)
