Tutorial goal:

In this tutorial we learn to mask an image when the background is light and the main object dark. We do this using channels.

Before you start your work, it is better to increase your image:
CTRL + zero or CTRL + Alt + zero (get 100%)


step 3

Go to the channel palette and inspect which one has the finest detail and best contrast. In this case the blue one is better. Than drag the blue channel at the icon(create a new channel) besides the trash icon.


step 4

The goal is to make the light areas white and the darker areas black. Select Image>Adjustment>Levels:

Use the lasso tool(or other tool) to select the inside of the image and fill the selection with black:
