Now we need to merge both these layers. This is easy: CRTL+E. Now we're going to add a lighting effect. Click Filters->Render->Lighting effects:

Color. CRTL+U to open up the Hue/Saturation screen. Check 'colorize' and change the sliders to a nice color:

Right, let's start on the wooden table. Not as difficult as you'd imagine. Open a new doc, make it big. Mine was 1000x1000. Now the first thing to do is change the foreground and background colors to two different shades of brown, one light and one dark. Just click the black square on the tools panel and play with the sliders:

This bit's even easier. Filters->Render->Clouds:

Uh, that's nice. Now Filter->Distort->Polar Coordinates. Don't forget to click 'Polar to Rectangular' on the pop up screen:

Now a bit of good old Noise. I used 9%:
