Tutorial goal:
I made this image for the contest "Broken Fence". Promised to make a tutorial. Here it is... In this tutorial you'll learn something about: Vanishing point, grids and stamp tool, layer masks, non destructive transparency masks, custom shapes, knockout layers, layer styles and a lot of different shortcuts and other things to make it easier to use Photoshop. Hope you like it and good luck.

step 1
You can start out with downloading the source image from the contest page: http://www.photoshoptalent.com/photoshop-contest/832/broken-fence.html
Choose the highest resolution. You can always scale it down later...

step 2
Since music paper has 5 lines we have to extend the fence. For that we will use Vanishing Point (CS2 or higher I think). Start out by opening the fence image in Photoshop.
Now we have to change the canvas size to get some work space. Go to Image > Canvas Size... (Alt+Ctrl+C). Change the unit to percent and turn on the relative checkbox. Type 100 for height. Set the anchor point to one of the bottom squares. Click Okay.

step 3
Make sure that the layer with the fence is active and go to Filter > Vanishing Point... You can also use the keyboard short cut Alt+Ctrl+V if you like.
Inside Vanishing Point we will start out by making our perspective plan. Click in the upper left corner of the stake to the left to set a point. Now click on the buttom left corner as well. Go to the rigth stake and click on the lower right corner and finally on the upper right corner. See the image...

step 4
If you didn't get the points right you can move them using the Edit Plane Tool (V).
Make sure that your grid is blue. If it is yellow Photoshop doesn't like it, however it will try (See image). If its red you better move your corners, because Photoshop doesn't like it at all...

step 5
Without doing anything else than making the grid close up Vanishing Point by clicking on the Okay button in the upper right corner. Now save your document as a PSD-file (File > Save as... (Shift+Ctrl+S)).
That way you will save your grid along with the Photoshop document. Make sure that the Layers checkbox is on...
(My Windows version is Danish, but it should look the same...)

better. It wasn't the work it self it tried to focus on, but rather the mothods.
By the way: A group layer mask and a knockout layer isn't the same... You have more controll with
the knockout layer. You can for instance change the opacity. It's also easy to move around and so.
An other good way to use it, is to fade some transitions without destroying your layer mask. Then
you always have the original layer mask you can go back to. Also a recommended use for it...
