introduction:
Abstract art is a funny kettle of fish. Basically what it isn't is a faithful representation of objects found in the real world and more of like, well, trying to capture the feelings and emotions of the object. Don't get it, do you? Here's another way. Iron Maiden. Yep, long hair, Eddie, loud guitars. Abstract. Iron Maiden don't reproduce sounds that you can hear in the real world (except maybe demons), but use sound to convey feelings and emotions. Wow, that was deep. So how can you create abstract work in Photoshop? There are literally thousands of ways of doing it, but I'm going to show you just one. Please, please, please during the course of this tutorial, if you feel like going a different way - go with it! The essence here is in creativity and not just following instructions.
requirements:
Adobe Photoshop 6 or higher
target result:

step 6
Get your crop tool out 'C' and choose the bit you like the most.

step 7
Hit Enter to to finish the crop action, and you're left with your favorite bit.

step 8
Then go ALT+CRTL+C to bring up the Canvas Size screen. We want to double the size of the document by displacing it to the right, so change the width to 'Percent' and make it 200 (to double the width). Then click the left center anchor point. This tells photoshop where to begin the process.

step 9
Copy the layer, CRTL+T to activate transform mode, right-click and choose 'Flip Horizontal' from the menu. Then just move the new layer across to the right:

step 10
Now we repeat the process but with the Height. Of course, we could have done both at the same time, but I wanted to show you clearly first. Next time you'll know, won't you?

step 11
CRTL+E to merge the two layers into one, then copy it, transform it, flip it vertically, and move it. I want now to make a little white border around the abstract, so bring up the 'Canvas Size' screen again and change both the Width and the Height percent to 108. Make a new layer at the bottom and fill it with white.
