Dont be afraid to make new layers

Anytime you add something new(pictures/effects) or a different color(or brush), try making a new layer just for that. Make lots of layers and you will be amazed at the endless possibilities and uses of the layers. If you use the 'Blending options' and like the results, you can right click that layer and 'Copy Layer Style' and use it on another layer.
