The New Canadian Flag. contest image

With the Oct 14th 2008 Canadian Election over and not much change, I envisioned a new flag to represent the new Canada.
Thanks to salingpusa for the picture of the flag on stock.xchng.com

A minority government means that more then one party must agree to anything before a law can pass. With 4 parties all with different agendas it will take forever for anything to happen. We have a party that wants to break up Canada, a conservative party, a moderate party and a socialist party all elected. The total seats in our government is 306 and the newly formed government has 143 seats. This is the second election with a minority government in a row.

Highlighting the Maple Leaf.

Entry guide: step 3 of 11

Creation of The New Canadian Flag.: Step 3

Making a gradient roughly based on the number of seats each party now has.
143 Conservatives
78 Liberal
50 PQ
38 NDP
0 Green

Entry guide: step 4 of 11

Creation of The New Canadian Flag.: Step 4

New colours for the Maple Leaf.

Entry guide: step 5 of 11

Creation of The New Canadian Flag.: Step 5

Hmm let's add something to show how fast our government will now move. An animal that will represent Canada better then the Moose or Beaver...
I know!

Entry guide: step 6 of 11

Creation of The New Canadian Flag.: Step 6

Yes! The Canadian Snail. I reversed the gradient so it would show up better against the Maple Leaf.

Entry guide: step 7 of 11

Creation of The New Canadian Flag.: Step 7

Merge the Maple Snail with the flag again.

Entry guide: step 8 of 11

Creation of The New Canadian Flag.: Step 8

I have had this picture of silk lying around for about 7 years now.
I turned it to a gray scale, increased the size to match the flag and raised the contrast by 50 so there would be more detail later.

Entry guide: step 9 of 11

Creation of The New Canadian Flag.: Step 9

Multiply blending used to merge image.

Entry guide: step 10 of 11

Creation of The New Canadian Flag.: Step 10

Filter ===>Distort ====>Displace used to blend image. After playing around I found that 10 was the best settings for the vertical and horizontal scales.

Entry guide: step 11 of 11

Creation of The New Canadian Flag.: Step 11

Adjusted brightness and contrast until it looked right.
All done now.
