Nice title font. Perhaps you could do sth more with the image itself (because this could be done in Indesign too: picture + text)

I did a TON of editing. Nothing looked good. I tried blurs, auras, and a reflection of a gun in his eye. I even made some flesh and an eyeball on the skull. I figured simple is better.

I absolutely agree that for many cases simple is better (or less is more...). But in cases like this you may wonder who should get the credits, you or the photographer. I do see you made some color changes, so it's sth. To give the comment a different approach: is this the final result what you had in mind when you got the idea (to be sure, this is no attack or whatever, just an honest question)?
