I used photoshop rendering and blending tools and a picture of rust pulled over the original image and trimmed to finish off.

Looks great. Just a tip to save some time looking for an image of rust. Make another layer and paint on top of image where you want rust, with a bright orange, change the layer type to overlay then you can detail it with smudging and the burn tool on the edges. I figured this out playing around. Have fun.
