Recreation of Arnolfini contest image
final rank: 5 out of 33 entries

One of my favorites, a tribute to Jan Van Eyck. This piece was commissioned to commemorate a particular marriage in the prominent Arnolfini family in 1434.
(Over fourteen hours of work, all outside sources used are listed but the original painting was not used in the result. Extra sources are listed in the SBS. Hope you enjoy!)

avatar Darla I love your work but many parts of it are pure painting, not real photos. You've made a great job, but not entirely on theme.

richie_rich [lvl 20] [vp 59] [vote medals 0]:
avatar richie_rich I like this work, but... to be right, i have to say: On man figure, there is something rare between the position of the neck and the head, and their colors also. Plus, the head looks so small than the body (proportions obvious). The right hand looks so flat, and the arm out of perspective (may be it needs some lights to give it some depth). Some rare happens with the length of the right arm of the woman and with her all left arm specially it rigidity. And the doggy needs more shadows to look it into the scene (specially in it right back leg). Well thats all.

Thanks very much for the critique Richie, I wish I had your help while I could edit my entry. I'm continuing to work on it though, so I'll take all the suggestions I can get. I'll send you a link to the final later next week if you want.
Cheers!

18-steps guide for Recreation of Arnolfini:

Entry guide: step 1 of 18

Creation of Recreation of Arnolfini: Step 1

First I used the dimensions of the original for my new document, found a source for wooden floors and distorted it and used perspective tools to match the painting.

Entry guide: step 2 of 18

Creation of Recreation of Arnolfini: Step 2

Found a suitable dress fabric from a model thanks to dreamer531 on DeviantArt. I used warp to get the general shape of the dress.

Entry guide: step 3 of 18

Creation of Recreation of Arnolfini: Step 3

Located a source for the terrier in the painting, and used the pen tool to cut a path around that spikey fur.

sources used:

    KI/s320/Cairn-Terrier.jpg

Entry guide: step 4 of 18

Creation of Recreation of Arnolfini: Step 4

I used a lot of warp and liquify to force the dress into a similar folded pattern as the original.

Entry guide: step 5 of 18

Creation of Recreation of Arnolfini: Step 5

I used an image of hair/fur for the fringe around her dress, cutting it out with the magic wand because it's going to be scaled down anyway.

sources used:
  • 1: http://www.sxc.hu/photo/965833

Entry guide: step 6 of 18

Creation of Recreation of Arnolfini: Step 6

Used more fringe and pieces from the dress for the limbs, used hue adjustment to match the blue.

Entry guide: step 7 of 18

Creation of Recreation of Arnolfini: Step 7

I reused the fur source to make the gentleman's coat, but used different blending modes to get the shade I needed.

Entry guide: step 8 of 18

Creation of Recreation of Arnolfini: Step 8

Using warp and distort I pieced several of the strips of fur together to get the ribbed pattern of the coat.

Entry guide: step 9 of 18

Creation of Recreation of Arnolfini: Step 9

I found a big black hat that I could warp into the weird shape that dude is sporting.

sources used:
  • 1: http://www.sxc.hu/photo/983833

Entry guide: step 10 of 18

Creation of Recreation of Arnolfini: Step 10

I reused the dress source to create the bedding in the background, again more blending modes to adjust the color, and warp/liquify to get the desired shapes.

Entry guide: step 11 of 18

Creation of Recreation of Arnolfini: Step 11

Adding in several sources for the girl, the chandelier, and masking out the backgrounds.

sources used:

  • 2: http://www.sxc.hu/photo/263465

Entry guide: step 12 of 18

Creation of Recreation of Arnolfini: Step 12

Additional sources, more masking. I'll use pieces of the gold frame to create the round mirror.

Entry guide: step 13 of 18

Creation of Recreation of Arnolfini: Step 13

The background wall was created by blurring a concrete texture.

sources used:
  • 1: http://www.sxc.hu/photo/986778

Entry guide: step 14 of 18

Creation of Recreation of Arnolfini: Step 14

Masked out these feet that matched the pose of the man, and worked on piecing together the shape of the mirror from the frame. Thanks to dragon-orb from DeviantArt for the source.

  • 1: http://dragon-orb.deviantart.com/art/CT-Renaissance-Faire-41-66885843

Entry guide: step 15 of 18

Creation of Recreation of Arnolfini: Step 15

Pieced together limbs from the fur source for the gent, and masked out his hand. Started thinking more about the light/shadow situation and used multiply layers to darken areas.

Entry guide: step 16 of 18

Creation of Recreation of Arnolfini: Step 16

Masked out another hand and duplicated it to get the open palms like in the painting.

Entry guide: step 17 of 18

Creation of Recreation of Arnolfini: Step 17

Added in a rug and worked on more of the background. Began to piece together her bonet from dress pieces, changing the color again with blending modes.

Entry guide: step 18 of 18

Creation of Recreation of Arnolfini: Step 18

Added in one last hand, thanks to Simbarb from SXC.
