I distorted it very much since I just like to experiment with different effects in photoshop. When you suddenly think to see huge differences while looking at the steps that's probably because I duplicated the image and flipped it, then set it to darken/lighten. When you take a good look at it, you'll see that that's what happened...

it looks like you use different brushes & liquify to swirl it up & then flip/mirror image, etc.
