shadows are wrong(sand in left corner).

Shadows are correct, light comes from the left to the right... Thus illuminating the right side of the depression, and shadowing the left. But thanks

Nice job, I think the light direction is good, perhaps give the shadow a bit more distortion so it feels more like a long shadow, elongated on the ground plane.

needed some gills and couldn't really find some that i liked, so i improvised.
