I added the original image.

I created an overlay layer and added some color to the junk! Then played with the transparency levels.

After the color was set, I put text on top of the hood. Then I warped the text to sort of match the contours of the hood.

After the text was right, I created an alpha channel and adjusted the levels to create a higher contrasted image of the original but in gray scale. I made a selection of the alpha channel and applied the text to the that layer as a layer mask.
