I don't agree on the perspective thing, it would make this image to clean when perspective on the cogs were 100%. This way it looks way better! Superb!

Beautifully drawn. Personally I would have blended the phoenix into the gas flame, gradually changing the colour. High mark from me!

Full resolution looks better...
Used the silhouettes and highlights from the original chessmen. Drew the shadows myself - with the mouse. Would have loved a tablet for this one... Added reflections on the board and blurred the pieces.
Will upload a step-by-step later. Just have to make it...

I can tell this took a lot of time to create. You did a good job, it looks great! But..., yes there is a but, i think the pieces in the back row are to light. Allmost without contrast. I think it's because you started out with a too light background color which you gave highlights also wich made the lot even brighter. But... yes there is a second but, overall this is a great entry! I like it when someone uses more tools than just cut and paste!

Thanks, Sulcus. I agree with you on the color. I toned the base color down. Made it more dark. Looks better I think. It's easier to see the highlights and so on... Thanks again...

Yes, it helped indeed. And I only changed B on the HSB (that's the black slider, right?) 5% and it still made a huge difference. Was easy because I had the color on a solid color layer with a layer mask. Only "problem" was that the men were in smart objects - because of the smart blur I added - so I had to open them individually to change them. But not that big a deal...
