I used my own photo I took of my sister (with her permission) for the reference. I loved her expression; I thought it would go well with the kangaroo ;)
I used free brushes and texture for the skin from
http://spiritsighs-stock.deviantart.com/

EDIT: I fixed the too bright albino kangaroo, the skin tone, a bit to the eyes (though that still needs work) and uploaded a full resolution image.
