Now that I finally figured out how to use layers ...
This is also my first time using smudge ...
For sun's rays, I used my muddy beach photo; chromed it; used correct camera
distortion filter to reduce it down to nearly circular; used blur tool in
different sizes to make flames/rays; used color correction/colorize to get red
tones.
For face, I used a crop that I had made for a previous PST contest (green
eyes); used correct camera distortion filter to make forehead a little bigger
& chin a little smaller & the whole thing rounder overall; used move
& skew to stretch it into a more circular shape; used circular marquee to
crop.
For sun (letters), I magic extracted out the pebbles; used correct camera
distortion filter; used move & skew to reduce the size & make it fit on
the face's forehead.
Lastly, I merged all layers onto a white background & used the ink
outlines filter to get the final effect.
UPDATE: I just finished making & uploading my very first step-by-step
guide! \o/ Whew! That's just as much work (if not more) than creating the
original artwork! :D
Uncle Milty always did say that he was going to build a rocket chair powered by
human gas emissions, but, unfortunately for us, we didn't believe him.

I didn't use any outside sources -- just a version of the green eyes photo from
which I had already removed the hands & the background & done various
corrections to the lips, etc. On this version I added black & yellow stripes
in the hair & scarf region to make her look sphinx-like; used the bas relief
filter; paint bucketed black into the background; & color
corrected/colorized to get her looking gold-going-on-bronze.
I'm currently infatuated with the chrome filter -- juvenile I know -- maybe
someday I'll grow up & get over it ...
I magic-extracted the hands out of the picture (those pesky hands! who needs
'em?); cloned stamped the lips to extend out the missing corners of her mouth;
paint bucketed & paint/healing brushed the empty space with flesh color
& shaped the corners of the mouth; used an oval to cut the face out; copy
& pasted the face back onto the original photo; merged layers; erased her
jaw/chin-line; paint bucketed the foreground & background & her scarf
with black & then magically extracted it out; stretched & corrected
distortion of the remaining face; cut & pasted face onto my muddy beach
photo; merged layers; chromed.
I know this is not terribly original, but I had fun doing it -- it's the graphic
artist in me coming out ;)
OK, lemme see if I can remember how I did this ...
First I resized the green eyes canvas to the same dimensions as my 4 trees
photo; stretched the green eyes photo to fit; used the cutout filter to simplify
green eyes details; used paint bucket/paint brush to get rid of everything
except eyebrows, eyes, nostrils, mouth; converted to black & white (which
was probably an unnecessary step, but it seemed like a good idea at the time)
& used paint bucket to change all the colors to my preference.
On my 4 trees photo, I used the cutout filter; magic extracted to get rid of
the white patch in the middle of the sky; copy & pasted 4 trees onto green
eyes; adjusted the 4 trees colors to my preference & voila.
Wow, I'm SO new at this! I'm SO intimidated! Everyone here is SO talented! :D
Basically, I used one of my own photos of a mud-covered beach for the
background -- I chromed it to the max & adjusted the color until it looked
like a swimming pool. Then I magically-extracted the troll; auto-corrected the
sharpness to make him look more like stone; made a copy of the troll, flipped it
& placed it underneath the first copy to make him look like he has 2 ears;
erased/healed some of the edges/flaws; magically-selected the new ear &
adjusted the color so that it would look more moss-covered than it really is;
&, finally, I copy & pasted the troll onto the swimming-pool background.
I picked the center of the photo, because there just happened to be a formation
there that looked like an object should be there.
I don't know how to make a shadow in the water to make it look like his body
is partially under water -- I consider this a flaw in my work, as well as the
fact that I don't know how to make the water swirl around his body.
And what I REALLY wanted to make was a picture of a troll emerging from a vat
of molten metal, or chocolate, or honey, or some other dense liquid, but I have
no idea how to make the background & the object the same texture & color
(darn it). So much to learn!
Fred tried to tell her that taking a vacation at Jurassic Park wasn't a good
idea, but she wouldn't listen.
